Can copper sulphate or malachite green oxalate kill friendly bacteria?
I'm adding these substances to the water to treat two whitespot-infected fish. I've taken the carbon out of the filter, but now I'm worried that I may be killing the friendly bacteria that have built-up.
Oh yes most meds completely kill off the good filter bacteria.
There is another solution that works just as well with out killing your filter. First you must change the water until your water perameters are ammonia and nitrite = 0 ppm. Nitrate under 10ppm. You may have to change 50-75% of the water to get your water pristine. Then in the morning add one teaspoon of non-iodized rock salt (kosher, ice cream) and crank the heat to 83 degrees. In the evening repeat one teaspoon per gallon of the salt. Repeat the same dose of salt the next morning, and evening. Keep your fish in this for 2 weeks. When you change the water replace with 1 tablespoon of salt per gallon water (equivilent to 4 teaspoons per gallon). When the two weeks are over start changing water with fresh and do not add any more salt to the water you are replacing. Bring the heat back down by 2 degrees per day and no more until you reach the ideal temperature.
If you have scaleless catfishes you cannot use salt. You will have to get those fish into a hospital tank and use the malachite green, skip the Copper Safe, I'd take it back. Watch for ammonia and nitrite build up in the hospital tank as it will need its water changed daily for the two week duration. Before you go dumping anything into the water, you need to completely research what it is your putting in there. Do not mix meds or over dose. If in 3 days you see no improvement with a med then that is a sign you are going the wrong direction. You do the wrong thing then you will have to completely rid the tank of that med before starting another. Get it wrong again and it may be too late for the fish. First sign of a problem - stop feeding and start changing water. Perfect water conditions and temperature will prevent many of these most common diseases. Salt works on all external ailments except flukes. I personally would not medicate the main tanks water unless the disease has been properly diagnosed under a microscope. There are plenty of sites on line that show you the "bug" and how to treat it, if you can take a skin scraping on a slide and view it under a microscope. Need not get an expensive one a kids microscope is powerful enough to see most "bugs".
