what pound test line and wire leader should i use if i am trolling 8-10 inch diving lures?
im going fishing in the philippines, and my friend there show me the lures to bring. i bought some 10 inch rappala lures.
Trolling for wahoo off the San Diego long range boats the standard rig is 80+ pound line and 200+ pound wire leaders. This is for trolling the 10-inch Marauder lures, generally at 8-9 knots of speed. Rapalas (like the CD-18 and 22) have less drag in the water, but I would still not recommend trolling them on less than 50 pound line, unless the boat's moving considerably slower. If you need a wire leader for the fish's teeth, it should probably be twice the strength of your line.
You need considerably heavier line for trolling to stand up to the impact of the initial strike, even though you might have no problem landing the same size fish from a non-moving boat on considerably lighter line.
Of course, if you're looking at getting bigger fish (over 100 pounds), 50-pound test might not be enough.
You might check with your friend about tackle specifics, or the species you'll be targeting.
